The Keurig Elite retails for around $100, but many online retail sites offer it at a discounted price.
What do you get for that price?
A good-looking, easy-to-use coffee machine manufactured with durable materials, plus a variety pack of 18 Keurig K cups, to get you off the ground on your Keurig coffee brewing system adventures.
Quick set-up . . .
Set-up is a snap. The Keurig Elite B40 comes with a Quick Start user guide that explains the one-time priming process, a simple procedure that takes less than ten minutes.
After priming, the Keurig coffee maker is ready for show time.
It brews coffee--of course--as well as tea and hot chocolate. Since the coffee machine generates such hot water, some consumers have used the Keurig Elite to prepare soup, too.
Two cup sizes . . .
This Keurig home brewer handles two basic cup sizes: 8 oz and 10 oz. In practice, you'll wind up with 7.25 oz or 9.25 oz of coffee or tea, respectively. Travel mugs fit comfortably on the drip tray.
The 48 oz water reservoir will make up to six cups of coffee before you'll need to refill it. This comes in handy when you're serving guests. Let your guests select the Keurig K cup they want, and get a little assembly line going, dropping one K cup after another into the cup chamber until everyone has their beverage of choice. It would take only five minutes or so to serve half a dozen people.
Always ready . . .
The instruction manual recommends that you leave the machine on when not in use--doing this guarantees coffee in less than a minute once you request it, because the machine keeps hot water ready for brewing. If you shut the coffee maker off after the brewing cycle, it'll take up to three minutes to brew coffee the next time you use it.
This "always on" feature is similar to the Bunn coffee makers. Furthermore, none of the Keurig home brewers are Energy Star rated. But if you wish to conserve energy, the Keurig Elite includes an Auto Shut off feature. It automatically powers down the coffee machine two hours after your last usage. (This auto shut off interval is adjustable on the higher-end Keurig home brewers.)
A De-Scale light notifies you when it's time to de-scale the home brewer. But on that note, to prevent a rapid development of calcium deposits or scale in the coffee machine--and this goes for any coffee maker--you really should stick to using bottled or filtered water exclusively for brewing your coffee. It'll taste better, too!
So, how does the Keurig B40 compare?
Consumers report that generally, the K cup coffee produced by the B40 is just as good as the coffee brewed by its more expensive brethren. The B40 simply lacks all of the bells-and-whistles of the other models: programmable timers, brew strength control, etc.
But overall, a solid Keurig single serve coffee maker, worth a close look.
