Krups FMF5 Coffee Maker Review
The Krups FMF5 coffee maker is a worthy entry in the increasingly crowded field of thermal coffee makers. A Krups machine is known for quality construction, attractive styling, and lots of bells-and-whistles, and the FMF5 doesn’t disappoint on any of those fronts. With its stainless steel finish, this coffee maker will look great on your counter top--fitting right in if you have stainless steel appliances. At a height of less than 14 inches, it's not too tall, either. You can park it underneath most kitchen cabinets. This Krups coffee maker includes a cool digital panel (the panel gives off a futuristic blue backlight). The LED control panel allows you to program the brewing cycle, especially convenient if you like to rise in the morning to the delicious aroma of freshly brewed coffee. The control panel also notifies you when it's time to descale the machine. No more guessing about when it's time to take on this onerous task. When using water filters like the ones from Aquasana, you rarely -if at all- have to decalcify your coffee machines, and the coffee tastes a lot better :-) I like the "no drip spout" on the thermal carafe, too. Many a coffee maker is relegated back to the shelf because they leak and dribble while engaging in the basic act of pouring, and this Krups machine has been designed to eliminate that persistent issue. Changing the coffee filter is another simple process on this one. The FMF5 comes with a soft-eject, spring-loaded filter basket. Spilling coffee grounds when changing the filter is a thing of the past! The Krups FMF5 uses #4 cone filters, and many coffee aficionados report that a cone-filter basket brews richer, more aromatic coffee than a flat-bottom basket. Speaking of coffee filters: if you dislike using paper filters, you can use the permanent Krups Gold Tone Coffee Filters in the FMF5. Gold tone coffee filters are dishwasher safe--and environmentally friendly--too. How many times have you wanted to brew only a cup or two of coffee, and not an entire, 10 cup pot? This coffee maker has a nifty 1-3 cup flavor feature that not only brews a smaller amount of coffee, but ensures that those few cups you brew are hot and flavorful, too. (Unlike many other coffee makers with which the 1-4 cup setting results in a tepid, bland cuppa joe.) Of course, any fully-featured coffee brewer like this one has the "Pause and Serve" feature, fast becoming standard these days. Sneak a cup of java before the brew cycle completes. But it's not all rosy in Krups coffee maker land. Many consumers report that when the Krups FMF5 starts rocking through the brew cycle, it reeks of a foul, "plastic-like" smell that also taints the coffee, an odor that seemed to hang around even after flushing the coffee maker with vinegar. Also, when you pour water in the reservoir, it bubbles up, obscuring the water gauge. (What point is there in having a water gauge if it gets fogged up during normal operation?)Leaking issues have been reported, too, in spite of the carafe's "no drip spout" design. In spite of these issues, if you're hunting for a good thermal coffee maker and want to try out the venerable Krups brand, it deserves a look.
